A big thank you (09/15/2013)
From: Bernadette Mahfood, Family Art Day Coordinator, River Arts Alliance

Nearly 400 folks, both small and big, came out to the sixth annual FAMILY ART DAY EXTRAVAGANZA on Saturday September 7, 2013. We finally picked a warm day, which encouraged youngsters to make over 200 clay pots on one of the four pottery wheels going steadily all day. They also made fish prints, paper from pulp, hats, puppets, book arts, marbleized paper, mosaics, and glove dolls. They painted in watercolors, in acrylics, with their fingers and on four murals. Attendees also bow drilled through shells and created a necklace. They tied knots, beat drums and participated in performance. All had loads of FUN and learned a bit more about making art. Giant bubbles, kite painting and flying were new this year.

Our fine local and regional artists did an outstanding job imparting their various skills to attendees. A big thank-you to Rachel Vogel, Bea Salisbury, Karen Klingbeil, Jill Krase, Mary Singer, Michelle Cochran, Tom Dukich, Patty Albrecht, Barbara Feiten, Julia Crozier, Kathy Delano, Ray & Margaret Kiihne, Billy X. Curmano, Mickey Maslowski, Shane Lamb, Jill Marie & Joe Pigott, Fred Fletcher, Anne Plummer, Dirk Nelson, Monta May, Kathy Florin, Jack & Leslie Zantow, John Durfey, Morro Schreiber, Dan Grimslid, Jamie Schell, Walken Ratajczyk, Maryann Frietsche, Catherine Cleary, Julie Johnston and Heather Casper and the volunteers from the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. We want to thank Winona Rental for a great job with their tent and equipment and an area restaurant for helping to feed all those hungry artists.

We could not have had such a great day without our generous sponsors: Southeastern Minn. Arts Council, Slaggie Family Foundation, Elizabeth Callendar King Foundation, Winona National Bank, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, city of Winona, Winona State University, Winona Park & Rec Dept., Minnesota Marine Art Museum and Affinity Plus Credit Union.

Thank you one and all.

And last but not least, we thank our volunteers who took care of the logistics of the day: Vicki Englich, Natalie Siderius, Amy Peterson, Ramona Redig, Maggy Jacqmin, A.J. Panicci, Kirissa Grams, Mary Farrell and Cotter students.
