On 8/29/13 I sustained an injury and had to call 911 for assistance. I would like to let the citizens of Goodview and Winona know how blessed we are to have dedicated, professional, competent and compassionate first responders available to us in emergencies. I first want to thank Catherine, who was the 911 operator who took my call. She was extremely calm and very reassuring to me. As a former Chicago Fire Department paramedic and a member of the Goodview First Responders, I have never had to call for help and this truly was a humbling experience.
I want to thank Sgt. Dave Allen and Officer Josh Murphy from the Winona Police Department for responding and helping me as well. The Goodview First Responders arrived, as well as Officer Tiffany Lehnertz, who did an excellent job in addressing the medical problem. The Winona Area Ambulance arrived on scene and paramedics Charlie Dicken and Brandon Scharmer were able to assess the medical condition and help manage the pain and emergency. I cannot tell you in words how professional and competent both paramedics were. They are excellent at what they do. I also feel the same about the other paramedics employed by Winona Area Ambulance, as well as the director employed at Winona Area Ambulance.
One of the first responders, Dave Fruth, went to our house at about 1:30 a.m. and stayed with our four-year-old twin grandchildren so my wife could be with me. Dave stayed at our house until about 11 a.m. Our neighbor, Linda Sobotta, also came and helped with the twins prior to our arriving home. It just overwhelms me the acts of kindness that people do for others.
Once at Winona Health, the emergency room staff were wonderful and so professional, and I received a follow-up call the next day from the ER physician. I was then transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital where I was evaluated and treated. Words cannot express my gratitude for all the people that were involved. We are so fortunate to have dedicated and professional men and women in our community who continue to help people in need. I felt compelled to take the time to write a thank-you note because many, many times the public only hears the negative comments about police, fire and first responders. Again, I was so blessed to have such wonderful first responders assist me and I only can say thank you.
