WAPS raises levy 4.6 % (09/22/2013)
By Jen Burris
The preliminary Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) total property tax levy for 2014 is $11,670,600, which is about $515,000 more than this year, a 4.62 percent increase. At the current numbers, Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) Fiscal Affairs Director Dan Pyan explained that a home with a $200,000 market value would have taxes that would increase approximately $60 in 2014.

Pyan explained that the state sets the levy limits and that it is important to levy the maximum amount. “If you under-levy, you may also under-aid yourself,” he said. The amount a school district levies affects the amount of aid it receives from the state.

Pyan noted that these numbers are subject to change since the Minnesota Department of Education is still processing the data. A final levy will be certified in December.
