Beware of property scam (09/22/2013)
By Jen Burris
Winona County Recorder Bob Bambenek has received multiple calls in the last week to notify the county of a potential scam. The scam involves contacting local homeowners, and offering assistance in clearing tax liens and providing copies of deeds.

Solicitors are offering the clearing of tax liens that may have resulted from unpaid back income tax, sales tax, or estate taxes. According to Bambenek, the targeted liens appear to have been previously released, or are no longer in effect. Bambenek warns Winona area residents not to send money.

Solicitors are also offering to provide copies of recorded deeds, for a fee. It is not illegal to sell copies of deeds, but a cost of $90 or more is considered excessive. A copy of the deed to your property is available from the County Recorder’s Office at no charge.

Anyone with questions or concerns may contact the Winona County Recorder’s Office at (507)457-6340 or the Winona County Sheriff’s Department at (507)457-6368.
