From: The Members of Badger Bluff Sands: Gerald Erney, Cheryl Erney, Kevin Rich
This letter is in response to a letter to the editor published in the September 11 issue of the Winona Post by Susanne Smith (Cochrane, Wis., resident) regarding a recent public meeting for a proposal of an industrial sand mine in Waumandee Township.
In the article, Ms. Smith was quoted as saying: “Badger Bluff Sands alleges that the ‘survey’ was done by a special interest group that skewed the results.” Regarding statistics of a minority of the Waumandee Township populace who returned the survey, this is completely false. No member of Badger Bluff Sands made this statement, as Ms. Smith claims; those comments were made by individual residents of the township at the meeting. The members of Badger Bluff Sands do not acknowledge any survey (as many residents of the township do not), so no opinion or comment regarding one was needed from us.
When informed about the errors in her letter, Ms. Smith stated she would immediately contact the Winona Post and retract her comments from the letter. No retraction has been made after three subsequent editions of the Winona Post have gone to print.
Badger Bluff Sands recognizes the inherent responsibilities with our proposal for a mine. Ms. Smith should recognize the responsibilities of accurate commentary inherent when reporting to the public and hold herself accountable when informed of inaccurate information.
Ed. Note: No retraction was received by the Post.
