Husman, E. Rita (09/29/2013)
Husman, age 87, of Winona, Minn., passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Rita was born in La Crosse, Wis., in 1926, to Ellen and Frank Kerrigan, the fourth of ten children. She graduated from the College of St. Teresa as a teacher and taught in Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota. She was united in marriage to Roger (Mike) Husman, in July 1952, in Ridgeway; he preceded her death in 1996.

Her dedication, strength, faith, and love of family laid the solid foundation for a nurturing home and partnership in parenting. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening, visiting with friends and family and traveling. She worked for the Winona Daily News as a district manager for 22 years until her retirement in 1999. The luxury of retirement allowed her to do the things she wanted to do and didnít have time for as a mother of ten children with a career. During her retirement, she was readily available to volunteer in her church activities of Readerís Theater, writing class, Eucharistic minister, and liturgical planning. She remained active in various leadership roles as a member of Catholic Daughters of America. Over her 39-year membership in the American Legion Auxiliary, she was actively involved in officer roles as secretary, vice president, president, and representative of Girlís State. She maintained her patriotic love of this country by volunteering as a polling judge during elections and encouraging political conversation among the young and the old. Rita was a volunteer for Winona Area Hospice and a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society. She traveled to Europe, Rome, Ireland, Mexico and throughout the United States. Her greatest love was her family. She has been an incredible role model for her children, their spouses and grandchildren, and a tremendous influence on all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by those she loved so generously.

Memorial contributions may be made to the local charities she supported: American Legion Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters, Winona Area Hospice, American Cancer Society, and Harvest House.

Rita is survived by her sons, Jim (Mari) Husman, Viburnum, Mo., Al (Josie) Husman, Alexandria, Minn., Gary (Irene) Husman, Rocklin, Calif., Ray (Robin) Husman, Urbana, Iowa, Paul (Judi) Husman, St. Michael, Minn., Mark (Pam) Husman, Winona, Minn., Tom (Wanda) Husman, Winona, Minn., and Mike (Heidi) Husman, Garden City, Mo.; daughters, Sheila (Paul) Skeels, Winona, Minn., and Sandy (Joe) Pilarski, Winona, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Jim (Marlene) Kerrigan, and Greg (Joyce) Kerrigan; and sisters, Kathleen Burdick, and Marian (Bill) Burns.

She was preceded in death by her husband; grandsons, Jack and Robert Pilarski, and Adam Husman; parents; and brothers, Dennis Kerrigan, Leo (Genevieve) Kerrigan, Eugene Kerrigan, John (Betty) Kerrigan, and Fr. Bernard Kerrigan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2013, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The Reverend Monsignor Richard M. Colletti will officiate.

Rita will be laid to rest in Fort Snelling National Cemetery with her husband.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., on Sunday, September 29, 2013, at Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, with the Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary at 7:45 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 9 a.m. until 9:45 a.m., on Monday, September 30, 2013, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The Catholic Daughters will meet in body at the church for the Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary at 9:30 a.m.
