Rodger Dean Robb, 84, died peacefully in his sleep September 25, 2013, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wis.
He was born February 17, 1929, to Clarence and Minnie (Rother) Robb in Homer Township, just south of Winona. He attended Winona Central High School, where he was celebrated for his athletic skills, especially in football, and played on the State of Minnesota All-Star team.
He joined the Marine Corps at age 17, in 1946, and spent the majority of his tour at Camp Pendleton in California. Upon returning to Winona, he attended Winona State University, where he met his wife, Claire (Thompson) Robb. He finished his degree in horticulture at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, after marrying in 1949.
An avid gardener, and lover of all things that grow, he worked as a dairy farmer, at the Minnesota Farm Bureau, Howe’s Fertilizer, and finally, Northrup King Seeds in Minneapolis, for the last 20 years of his career. He retired in 1991 and returned to Winona for the rest of his life.
Rodger is survived by his children: Rodger D. Robb II, of Moose Lake; Christine Bengtson (Gary), of De Soto, Wis., Michael S. Robb (Monica), of Winona, Paul J. Robb, of Santa Monica, Calif.; and grandsons: Maximilian and Lorenzo Robb of Santa Monica, Calif., Tanya Patin of Winona; and great-grandchildren Delilah, Jazlyn and Braydn.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2013, at Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home. Following the visitation, the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona will provide full military honors.
Rodger will be laid to rest in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
