Veteranís cemetery funding (09/29/2013)
From: State Senator

Jeremy Miller

On September 26, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs announced they were awarded a $10 million federal grant to cover the entire cost of a new cemetery in southeastern Minnesota for our stateís veterans. With the operational funding for the new cemetery authorized by the legislature this past session, the $10 million federal grant was the last step in the process to secure funding for the cemetery.

Iíve had the privilege to author several pieces of legislation during my first three years as a member of the Minnesota Senate, and the veterans cemetery in Fillmore County has certainly been a highlight. This grant and the support from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to build a veterans cemetery is a huge victory for southeastern Minnesota.

The new cemetery in southeastern Minnesota is an excellent representation of how government can and should work. Together with local officials in Fillmore County, state and federal leaders and agencies, we ensured that our nationís veterans will be honored. It is truly a great day for our stateís veterans and their families.

The Southeastern Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery will be on 170 acres of land that was donated by Fillmore County located near Preston. Minnesotaís growing population of aging veterans created a need for additional cemetery space, and with more than 40,000 veterans currently living in southeastern Minnesota, the new cemetery in our region means a tremendous amount to veterans and their families, and I am incredibly proud to help honor our veterans in this way.

With the final approval of the grant award, groundbreaking and construction of the new cemetery will begin this fall.

As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, or if I can ever be helpful, please do not hesitate to contact me by email, sen.jeremy.miller@senate.mn or phone, 651-296-5649. It is an honor to serve as your State Senator.
