An easy A? Or is WAPS grading scale on target (10/02/2013)
By Jen Burris
At the upcoming Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) Board meeting on Thursday, the current high school grading scale will be examined after questions were raised by board members about whether the current requirements for a passing grade were too easy.

Prior to 2011, Winona Senior High School had a more rigorous grading scale, which was changed due to a request reportedly made by parents back in 2008.

According to research done by WAPS, the new grading scale is aligned with four of the Big 9 districts. Albert Lea, Austin, Faribault and Mankato public schools all use the same grading scale currently employed by WAPS.

Board members have voiced concern regarding the easing of the grading scale in past discussions. Members requested a report on the work done by a previous committee that had studied the grading scale change made in recent years. Principal Kelly Halverson will present that information to the board on Thursday, October 3.

Board member Ben Baratto said during a recent meeting that he felt a 60 percent for a passing grade was too low.

Board member Jeanne Nelson said that there were positives and negatives to both scales, adding that a teacher has the ability to make the course as difficult or as easy as he or she wants.

The requested information is likely to bring up another debate on what will benefit WAPS’ students the most, both in school and in the future.
