Bernard J. Maas died on Wednesday September 25, 2013, at his winter home in Mesa, Ariz. Bernie was born on December 26, 1943, in Winona, to Edmund and Esther (Mersch) Maas. He attended Cotter High School and Winona State University, receiving a B.S. in accounting. He met his future wife, Lora (Lore) Ehmann at the Winona Theatre, where he was manager and Lore was concession girl.
They were married on April 16, 1966, in Winona and moved to Lewiston, Minn., where he was an accountant for Camera Art/Herff Jones for 21 years. Bernie was city clerk for the city of Lewiston for over 20 years and was on the Lewiston Volunteer Ambulance Service. He had been an accountant at Fusion Coatings for a number of years before taking early retirement due to health issues.
Bernie enjoyed baking, especially chocolate chip cookies; his dogs Skye and Mollie; the Minnesota Vikings, and Arizona Cardinals. He was a former member of St Mary’s Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lore, daughter, Tina (Wayne) Lewis, Austin, Minn.; and sons Terry, Winona, Minn.; Todd, Watertown, Wis.; grandsons, Hunter and Forrest Lewis of Austin, Minn.; his sisters, Esther (Edward) Aldinger, Kathleen (Freddy) Frickson, both of Winona; and brother, John (Mary) Maas, of Onalaska, Wis. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Edmund, and sister, Rita (John) Gordon.
A Celebration of His Life will be held at the Winona History Center on Sunday, October 20, 2013, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.
