Power politics in county government (10/16/2013)
From: Hans Madland

When elected officials say concerned citizens are “special interests,” then something is very wrong. Special interests are people who hope to use government power in order to make money. The people opposed to the radical rewrite of the county zoning ordinance are trying to stop special interests.

We are in this situation, let’s be honest, precisely because a small group despises reasonable compromise. If a feedlot expansion destroys the value of neighbor’s property, they don’t care. If building on a steep bluff causes erosion and destroys the value of property owners down below, they do not care.

I find it amazing that rural landowners who are going to have the value of their property affected are not up in arms. If you live in rural Winona County and find yourself close to one of the feedlots eager to expand, be prepared to see the value of your home destroyed. What should be clear to everyone is that the County Board is on the verge of deciding that one group of rural landowners will make a lot of money while a different group will suffer.

This is not a fight between city and county. That bit of blarney is intended to distract people from the real issue. Any reasonable person paying attention to this would have to conclude that Washington power politics has found its way into county government. This is a sad state of affairs.
