Winona man pleads guilty to vehicular homicide (10/16/2013)
By Jen Burris

For the next 10 years, Robert Tofstad will spend every weekend closest to February 19 in jail, as part of a plea agreement for his role in the death of 85-year-old Ruth Brendel. Tofstad hit Brendel with his vehicle on February 19, 2012, as Brendel was walking to church.

It is reported that Tofstad had not properly scraped the snow and ice from his windshield the morning the incident occurred. Tofstad also admitted to drinking alcohol the night before the crash.

The plea agreement required Tofstad to plead guilty to vehicular homicide, in order to have the secondary charges careless driving, and underage drinking and driving dismissed.

Tofstad will spend 60 days in jail, and will be on supervised probation for 10 years, which requires him to be jailed one weekend in February each year.
