GMO workshop this Saturday (10/23/2013)
From: Jim Riddle

In a few weeks, voters in Washington State will decide if foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) must be labeled. Similar laws have been passed in Connecticut and Maine; 64 countries already require GMO labeling; and bills are pending in the Minnesota legislature.

GMOs are organisms that have been created by transferring genes from one species, family or kingdom to another, in ways that could never be achieved through natural breeding and reproduction. GMOs are novel, patented plants, animals and micro-organisms that have never before existed in nature or been part of the human diet.

GMO crops are owned by companies such as Dow, DuPont and Monsanto. Farmers who plant GMO crops do not own the seeds. They sign licensing agreements to use the patent-holders’ technology, and have been sued for saving seed.

Many processed food products now contain ingredients derived from GMO crops. Research is showing that this technology has significant environmental and human health impacts.

On Saturday, October 26, I will be joined by representatives from Right to Know Minnesota to give a workshop, “GMOs and You,” at 1 p.m. at the Historic Masonic Temple in Winona as part of Bluff Country Coop’s Jubilee event.

Please attend to learn about the latest scientific research on GMOs and what you can do to make sure that foods containing GMOs are labeled.
