Hamernik Jr., Alanson W. ‘Slim’ (11/01/2013)

Alanson W. “Slim” Hamernik Jr., 67, of Winona, Minn., passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at his home.

Slim was born on January 1, 1946, in Winona, to Alanson and Alma (Barnes) Hamernik Sr. On February 14, 1970, he married Marcia “Marcie” Ward in Winona.

Slim was employed as an electrician for 19 years, and then he owned and operated Winona Rental for 25 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Eagles, the Athletic Club, the American Legion, the American Rental Association, the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, and the “Minnesota Boys” his group that he hunted with in the Black Hills.

In his younger years, Slim enjoyed playing softball, golfing, and bartending. He was excellent at any kind of cooking, whether that was baking, grilling, canning, or holding fish fries in his garage. He loved cooking for his family and friends, and sharing his culinary creations with them. As a great cook, he also loved to eat – especially Rocco’s pizza and grapes.

Slim always wanted to be outside and could be found on the river boating and fishing; hunting; growing flowers and vegetables in his garden; tending his Purple Martin houses; and running his backyard bait shop. He loved cheering for the Green Bay Packers; shopping – his favorite places were Fleet Farm and Midtown; going to auctions and estate sales; riding around town on his scooter; and was a collector of many things.

His greatest joy in life was his family, especially his grandkids – he never missed a chance to spoil them.

Slim is lovingly survived by his wife, Marcia “Marcie” Hamernik, Winona, Minn., children, Aaron (best friend, Chrissy) Hamernik, Winona, Minn., and her children: Brittney, Jake and Taylor; Jonathan (Karie) Hamernik, Eagan, MN, and their children: Morgan and Nathan; and Bryan (Chris Schwichtenberg) Hamernik, Winona, MN, and their children: Kennedy, Griffin, Lauryn, Nolan, Gracyn, and Camden; sisters: Jacquelyn Denzer, Minnesota City, Minn., and Mary Lou Pellowski, Winona, Minn.; as well as many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Terry Hamernik.

Visitation will be held at Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home on Sunday, November 3, 2013, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., where Monsignor Richard M. Colletti will lead a Prayer Service at 4 p.m.
