Bike lane or just a picture of a bike? (11/06/2013)
From: Matthew F. Byrnes

When friends from the Cities see Winona’s 5th Street “bike lane” they often laugh out loud knowing that putting a picture of a bicycle on a parking lane does nothing to protect the lives of cyclists.

Encouraging people to weave between parked cars puts them at risk of getting hit by cars that don’t see them. Encouraging people to ride next to parked cars increases their chances of getting doored, which can be fatal. The 5th Street “bike lane” doesn’t make biking safer, it makes it more dangerous.

The City of Winona seems more interested in collecting bicycle awards than making the city bike friendly. A city council member’s snide response of “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a cyclist stop at a stop sign” when interviewed about improving bicycle infrastructure shows exactly how serious the city is about the lives of bicyclists. It seems to me that city officials need to do a better job looking out for bicyclists.
