As a member of AAUW, I join with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in urging you to support the Fair Minimum Wage Act (H.R. 1010/S. 460).
With today’s minimum wage stuck at $7.25 per hour, someone who works 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, will take home less than $20,000 a year and live below the poverty line. The Fair Minimum Wage Act would gradually increase the minimum wage over the next three years, starting with an increase to $8.20 per hour, and then slowly rising to $9.15 and then $10.10.
Raising the minimum wage is an important step toward increasing the economic security of working women and their families. Fifty-six percent of the workers who would benefit from this bill are women, and it is especially important for women of color.
Again, I urge you to support the Fair Minimum Wage Act (H.R. 1010/S. 460) to support working women and their families. Thanks to all supporters. I look forward to seeing the Fair Minimum Wage Act passed by Congress.
