Copper thief causes $80K in damages to Winona Mall (11/12/2013)
By Sarah Squires
A young white man was seen climbing down from the roof of the Winona Mall last week, and further inspection indicated that the suspect may have caused $80,000 in damage to the building’s air conditioning system. According to Winona Police, officers were first called to the mall just after 8 a.m. on Thursday, November 7. Mall employees had noticed a man climbing down a ladder from the roof. Witnesses told police the man had a pair of pliers with him.

Mall staff later checked the roof to see what the man might have been up to and found about $500 in copper had been stripped from the air conditioning units. Four of seven roof units were damaged, and police said the suspect caused $80,000 in damage to the system.

The suspect is described as a white male, aged 19 to 24, unshaven, and about 5’10” tall. Surveillance photos showed the man was wearing a black hoodie. The incident is under investigation.
