Elgin man arrested in drug sting (11/17/2013)
On November 13, the Southeastern Minnesota Narcotics Task Force arrested 49-year-old Daniel Gernes of Elgin during an operation in Rochester. Gernes was arrested with a pound of methamphetamine that had been recently shipped in from out of the state.

The following day, detectives searched a Wabasha County residence in Elgin. In that search warrant, they found close to $60,000 in cash. This was discovered by a Wabasha County K9. Also, about a half pound of marijuana was found near the cash.

Later in the day, a search warrant produced a stolen assault rifle from Illinois, a small amount of marijuana and meth. This search warrant was conducted outside of Wabasha at a campground where Mr. Gernes camped.

This is the largest cash seizure ever for Wabasha County. This money is used by the task force to provide support for their work to destroy the drug trade in Southeastern Minnesota.

Wabasha County Sheriff Rodney Bartsh commented, “This is a significant case not only for our county but for Southeast Minnesota. These cases are labor intensive, but the results in this one paid off. Taking a pound of meth off the streets that was likely intended for Wabasha County is huge. It’s truly unfortunate that there is still such a demand for such a destructive drug.”
