Our tax money spent on defense fund (11/17/2013)
From: Jerry Wilcox

Zumbro Township

My tax money (and yours) was never collected in order to be spent by the three current commissioners that are using it as a defense fund because they decided to pick a fight with the attorney general over the safe driving program.

Wobbe, Hall, and Springer strongly disapproved of the 2011 board for retaining outside legal counsel. Commissioner Wobbe, quoted in the 9/13/11 Winona Daily News (WDN), said, “If our legal team cannot advise us properly, then we shouldn’t have them on staff.” Hall concluded that hiring an outside attorney made “no sense.”

These same commissioners just did a 180 degree turn and hired an outside law firm to represent the county in defending what the state auditor and attorney general claim is an illegal program. The signed contract for outside counsel has no maximum threshold for the legal fees Wabasha taxpayers are responsible for. The September bill was over $13,000 and October will likely be several thousand more. Our tax dollars already pay County Attorney Nordstrom to handle this defense so why isn’t he defending his own point of view? This is misuse and abuse of the taxpayer and his money and it has to stop, enough is enough.
