Festival Director, Frozen River Film Festival
In early October, a vital member of the arts community, Shawn Nicol, suffered a grievous injury. Shawn has been an enthusiastic and integral part of many Winona festivals, including the Frozen River Film Festival, Mid West Music Fest, Boats and Bluegrass and the Great Dakota Homecoming. Ever since he was a student doing his practicum at Winona State University, he has offered his time in the demanding role of Volunteer Coordinator for these festivals. As the Director of the Frozen River Film Festival and a coordinator for the Mid West Music Festival, I have seen first-hand the impact of Shawn’s passion for art in our community. These small non-profits rely heavily on volunteers and someone needs to put it all together. That person is Shawn Nicol.
His injuries include spinal fractures, a sacral fracture, two pelvic fractures and both left thigh and hip hematoma after an accident on an ATV. Through therapy and rest, Shawn still plans to continue his festival work but he needs help from the members of this community. I am touched to see many organizations, artists and individuals from Winona coming together to support someone who has given so much to the community. Many people are donating to a silent auction being held on Shawn’s behalf. If you have any items to donate to the silent auction please bring them to the VFW this Saturday between 2 and 4 p.m. or contact Christina at 218-838-2927. Also, everyone is invited to come to Shawn’s Broken Spine Benefit Jam for free music, snacks and the silent auction. Music by Beet Root Sew, Rat Pit, and more. Saturday, November 16 4:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. By supporting Shawn, you are supporting your community.
