Bravo Minnesota Marine Art Museum! In addition to an impressive and diverse collection of American and European art, the museum excels at offering exhibits that inspire and excite. The Tri-State Invitational: 3 Women From 3 States is one of the finest yet. Julia Crozier from Minnesota, Jennifer Terpstra from Wisconsin and Nancy Purington from Iowa offer very distinct but complimentary visions of the Mississippi River that borders each state.
I appreciate this diversity as well as the different media used to evoke each artist’s rendering of this iconic river. Terpstra employs colorful encaustic painting in her abstract interpretations; Purington uses a variety of media, from paint to collage, in her work that unites the river and moonlight. Julia Crozier, best known for her bright, outlined paintings, depicts flora, river towns, and nature in abstract. Each offers her own unique vision — spiritual, abstract, and whimsical — that contributes to a vibrant, unified whole.
Each region represented by these strong, visionary artists can be proud of their contributions to this exhibit! I encourage you to visit the museum to reflect upon their work and the Mississippi River in order to experience this wonderful collaboration. The show will be exhibited through January 12, 2014.
