Buildings damaged by the September 13 fire are slated for demolition early next week. More than two months after the blaze, City of Winona Building Official Steve Carson reported that the three downtown buildings directly affected by the blaze are expected to be demolished and cleared away by mid-week. Third Street will remain open during most of the effort, with crews working from Center Street and the alley. The street may be closed briefly to level the front section of the Third Street buildings, Carson explained.
"It'll be bare ground until someone decides to do something with it," Carson said about what lies ahead for the properties. City officials are eager to assist any redevelopment projects.
Sole Sport has a new location directly across Third Street from their former storefront. Brosnahan Law Firm has a new home in the Home Federal Bank Building at Fourth and Center streets. Last month, the Winona Islamic Center was fundraising and considering relocation or rebuilding options.
