Remembering Dad, Milton Ellinghuysen (11/27/2013)
What a Blessing

Often I remember things my Dad would say he was thankful for and it is an honor to share a few of his blessings that meant so much to him:

If you’d say “Why is it me Dad that has to always do the things?” His answer was: “What’s the difference who does it, as long as it gets done!”

“I don’t know why I even get out of bed in the morning sometimes.” His answer was: “Because you can!”

“Why do I have to watch over my sisters or brother?” His answer was: “Are we not our brother’s keeper?”

When you waited for a special day or time and it finally arrives and after all is said and done a feeling of letdown would set in, he’d say, “Don’t be sad because it’s over, be glad because it happened.”

When your heart ached so much for a pet that passed away he’s say, “Smile, because that’s what they made you do, so don’t let ‘em down now.”

When someone was mean to you or someone else, with words that hurt you so badly he said, “Don’t let them get to you. Remember what goes around eventually comes around.”

I think the ones I’ll remember the most is when he was so very ill and spoke the words, “When you don’t have your health you have nothing.” So be thankful for the strength you have to be able to let you live life to its fullest.

And above all when I’d do something wrong and I’d let him know how sorry I was, he’d look at me and would say, “It’s already forgiven and forgotten.”

I guess I have a lot to be thankful for, and like you’d say Dad, “Be thankful for the little things because those little things are the big things.”

I love you Dad and miss you so. A blessed Thanksgiving to all
