From: Mayor Mark F. Peterson
I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Merchants Bank on its 25th year supporting the “10 Days of Giving” food drive here in Winona. This wonderful program, December 1-10, raises much-needed food and money that is used to buy food to support Winona Volunteer Services in its efforts to help those who are hungry. The program was important when it started and has been successful. Unfortunately, the need still exists in our community.
There are many great things going on in our community. We are fortunate to have a strong manufacturing base; fine universities and a technical college; a growing tourism industry and unsurpassed natural beauty and recreational opportunities. While many are doing well, not everyone shares in this good fortune. Thankfully, the people of Winona are very generous and have always stepped up when they see a need. With the leadership from Merchants Bank and the support of all of us, each year the drive is a success.
Nobody should ever go to bed hungry at night. This is not just a one-time need but a year-round challenge to all of us. Hopefully, some day we will have less need than exists now. Until then, I’m sure the people of Winona, as they always have, will give and give generously to help those who are less fortunate. You can drop off or send a check to any Merchants bank location or Winona Volunteer Services. You can also make your donation online at the Winona Volunteer Services website at www.winonavs.org.
It goes without saying, but on behalf of the community, my thanks to Merchants Bank for coordinating this 25th year of giving and to our community for helping our friends and neighbors in need. It is appreciated.
