Winona must improve traffic enforcement (12/15/2013)
From: Thomas Jaszewski

Iím amazed and pleased by your article on pedestrians and the dangers of walking across Broadway for pedestrians. What I find especially disconcerting is the response from the city. More signs? Signs moved down the street? Do we really think the problem is signage, or is it unmolested careless drivers without consequences? We have a system in place. Itís called traffic enforcement. When is the last time you saw a traffic cop on a side street tagging speeders on Broadway? I live one block off Broadway with a view of the traffic from my front living room window. The numbers of speeders and phone users while speeding and driving is stunning to watch. Why not a program of enforcement? Itís done with winter parking, and is pretty fierce some years, nailing scores of students. Whatís wrong with Winona having a reputation for tough traffic enforcement? It appears a large number of the offending drivers are out-of-state plates. The same bunch that anxiously pass on the right in inappropriate zones. Passing on the right is another unfettered activity, like phone use and speeding, without enforcement. Letís use our cop shop and the word will spread quicker than any new signs.
