Who is this Child? (12/22/2013)
From: Marcy Borgschatz

I am responding to Mary Zimmerman’s December 15th article. I feel her answer to the question, “Who is this Child?” is incomplete. I would like to add a fuller biblical response to this question.

The most important answer is that the Baby lying in the manger is the Son of God. He was begotten of His Father in all eternity before the world began. In fact, He created the world! Then in the fullness of time, He became one of us to carry out His mission of Savior of the World. The Apostle John wrote: “The Word (God) became flesh and lived for awhile among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14 NIV)

He was miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary and born of a virgin. This fulfilled the words of the prophet Isaiah written about 800 years earlier: “The Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and give birth to a son and will call Him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14). When Jesus was born in a Bethlehem stable, He became Immanuel - God with us. He was God and man at the same time.

The Baby in the manger was also the promised Messiah who grew up and revealed His Father to us and reconciled us to Father God through His suffering and death. He victoriously rose from the dead and ascended to heaven. Now He sits at the right hand of the Father and reigns forevermore.
