Winona County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Rob Averbeck announced on Monday that he will run for the office of Winona County Sheriff this fall. Longtime Sheriff Dave Brand has not stated whether he will seek reelection. Averbeck is the first candidate to enter the 2014 race, but he said he expects other non-incumbent challengers.
“I’ve been urged by the public and by employees of the sheriff’s office to run for the last two elections. The time is right for me right now and I’m going to give it a shot,” Averbeck explained. He added, “I think the county is preparing itself for some change.”
Averbeck has worked for over 20 years in law enforcement, most of those with the Winona County Sheriff’s Department. “One advantage I will have over my future competitors is that I have worked in every division of a sheriff’s office,” from criminal investigations to detention, he said. That means “I’ll have the insight on how each division is run, should be run, the expectations for the division, and the expectations each division would have of a sheriff,” he continued.
If elected, Averbeck said he would require more face-to-face interactions between deputies and complainants, more rural patrols, and would make sure that supervisors are on duty during night shifts.
