Again this year, volunteer tax assistance will be offered to seniors and low income individuals and families at no cost. In 2014, the program has been renamed VITA – Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. VITA will be open from February 3rd to April 12th at the Live Well Winona office at 619 Huff St., near Sarnia.
The assistance is provided by trained volunteers. Joliene Olson and Richard Schneider are leading the program in 2014 as they have done for several years. VITA, an IRS sponsored free tax service, focuses on low income taxpayers of all ages with relatively simple returns, who find it difficult to pay for professional tax help. Only taxpayers who meet certain criteria are eligible for assistance. The income limits are $30,000 for a single person, $40,000 for a family of two, and $50,000 for a family of three or more. The volunteers will help with returns that include W-2 and retirement income where the taxable amount is predetermined. A person who qualifies by meeting the income requirement noted above and who wants help with their return should call 474-7202 beginning January 27, 2014 for an appointment.
