School bus driver arrested for DWI (02/02/2014)
By Amelia Wedemeyer

On Tuesday, January 28, at 4:44 p.m. Winona County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an accident involving a Lewiston-Altura school bus on Fern Valley Drive, south of Rollingstone. According to deputies, Karl Allen Herber, 54, of Rollingstone, was driving five children ranging in age from kindergarten to fifth grade when he went off the road and hit several trees. Herber was referred to the Winona County Attorney for charges of third-degree driving while intoxicated and child endangerment. Another school bus picked up the children and no one was injured in the accident. Deputies reported that Herber had a blood alcohol content of .09 percent.

“I cannot comment on the personnel part of it, but we can assure families that we take it very seriously and we will address the issues surrounding the incident,” Lewiston-Altura Superintendent Jeff Apse said.
