Wanek, Janice F. (02/05/2014)

Janice F. Wanek, age 78, of Winona, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at Winona Health, surrounded by her family.

Janice was born in Winona, on July 4, 1935, to Ben and Marcella (Grathen) Grupa. She was united in marriage with Stanley J. “Stosh” Wanek, on February 19, 1955, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona; he preceded her in death on December 13, 2004.

She was a graduate of Cotter High School in Winona, and was a lifelong member of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka. Janice was active with the Winona Health Auxiliary for over 20 years, where she was a buyer for the Gift Shop, and was proud and honored to have served as a volunteer for over 10,000 hours.

Her greatest joy in life was her family, and she enjoyed being active in the school activities of her children and her grandchildren. Her family will remember her as the strongest little woman they ever knew – she was their own personal hero.

Janice is lovingly survived by her children: Richard (Kim) Wanek, Winona, James Wanek, Boise, Idaho, Michael (Coleen) Wanek, Winona, and Jane Tlougan, Winona; grandchildren: Andrea, Nicole, Ben, Bryan, Josh, Sarah, Elizabeth, Paul, and Jacob; brothers and sisters: John (Fran) Grupa, Thomas Grupa, Gloria (Dean) Denzer, Charles (Jayne) Grupa, Mark Grupa, Terrence Grupa, and Michael (Denise) Grupa; as well as other relatives and friends.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka. The Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Hargesheimer will officiate.

Janice will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home on Friday, February 7, 2014, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., where the Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. There will not be any visitation held on Saturday; please meet at the Basilica for Mass.

Pallbearers will be Janice’s grandsons: Joshua Stutzka Tlougan, Paul Tlougan, Ben Wanek, Bryan Wanek, Jake Wanek and Mario Avila.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be considered to the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka, Hope House, or the Winona Health Auxiliary.

Thank you to Dr. Hammel and Dr. Thuener, as well as the staffs at Winona Health, Winona Hospice and Lake Winona Manor for their care and compassion.

Online condolences or memories may be left for Janice’s family at www.watkowski-mulyck.com.

Entrusted to our care – Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home.
