Oh God! (02/16/2014)
From: T. M. Schoewe

We just remembered a movie we saw some 30 years ago that humorously captured how people in a pinch sometimes ironically try to butter-up to God and take advantage of His kindness and sympathy, as though they can cut a deal with Him based on their promise to be better individuals. Of course in exchange they want God to bail them out of their dire straights. The movie starred George Burns and Burt Reynolds and was called “Oh God!” See it if you haven’t already!

Have you ever at some point or another in your life ever said “Oh God!”? Was it in disgust, was it a plea or was it with wonder? Last week we wrote about the three wonderful attributes of God, His three “Os,” His Omnipotence, His Omnipresence, and His Omniscience. Today we want to tell you that God is also holy and just, and that His justice is perfect. And above all things, that GOD IS ALSO KIND!

The old Romans and the ancient Greeks tried very hard to connect with the great power that is beyond this world or what has been called “creation.” And they created for themselves an elaborate system of gods and goddesses whom they imagined had authority over all the lands, the air and seas, the sun, moon and stars, etc? However, those gods were in many ways just like them. They were big and strong, and powerful, but at the same time they were also petty and jealous — and even very vengeful!

Looking into the Scriptures, it’s good to see how the one true God is pure and holy without any trace of evil. Look at old Psalm 99 which says, “Exalt the Lord our God and worship, for the Lord our God is HOLY.”And you know the best part of what scripture tells us is that through faith in Christ, we too are declared to be holy.

Thinking about God, one of the biggest human burdens we have to drag with us everyday is guilt. No matter how much we pretend that everything is just fine, even wonderful, each one of us has a conscience, that pure voice inside us that tells us the ugly truth that “we are not holy” and surely don’t deserve the approval of a holy God. So it is good to get to know the true God even better, and know just what His forgiveness is really all about. The Bible tells us that while God’s justice is perfect, God loves to show mercy to us. And it is the life, death, and resurrection of His son Jesus Christ that changes everything in the way God looks at us. So when we read in the old Psalm 103 that Lord God does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities, we should be filled with thanksgiving, not guilt! So God’s justice is perfect! It’s precisely what we need to really feel free from the guilt of sin!

Finally note, GOD IS KIND! Do you love God? It is a bit hard to love someone who you know is “just and holy” since you know you deserve His anger and punishment. So here is the surprise! Non-believers, listen up. God Who is holy is the one who has commissioned His son to rescue this world from sin, death, and the grave and hell. So the favorite name for Jesus is MESSIAH, meaning He is the one called by God to show us His kindness and love. The old fisherman John got it straight for us when he wrote about God’s kingdom and love and said in 1 John 4:10: “This is love; not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

So Jesus is your Messiah and it was for just such a person as you and me and for just such a time as this in 2014 that he suffered and died on that cross and arose again from the dead, and now rules this world as the Father’s executive for us. He represents His Father and us before His Father. How can you not love someone who would do all that good for you?

So God, your God, is holy and just, but above all, always kind! Don’t miss out on His kindness!
