Volkman, Roger E. (03/03/2014)
By
Volkman, Roger E.

May 17, 1940 – February 26, 2014

Roger Elmer Volkman joined his Heavenly Father, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at Sauer Health Care. Roger was born on May 17, 1940, to Hubert Sr. and Emma (Nelson) Volkman in Fremont, Minn. He attended St. Martins Lutheran School and graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1958.

On August 2, 1958, Roger was joined in marriage to Jean E. Erdmann at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Winona, Minn. They made their home in the Winona area and raised their children here. Roger dedicated his Christian life to working hard and providing for his family; yet always enjoyed laughter and time spent with family and friends. As a young man, he worked at National Can Retinning in Winona. In 1960, he moved on to employment at the Frisch & Johnson Garage in St. Charles, as a mechanic and school bus driver. His time as a “telephone man” started in 1965 when he joined Northwestern Bell, and never missed the daily “coffee breaks” at Shorty’s. He retired from Qwest in 2001.

Roger kept busy raising beef and doing field work on his farm. Throughout the years, he was an active member at St Matthew’s Church serving on various boards and as an usher. Roger enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He looked forward to the “socializing” at card club and watching his favorite westerns on TV. Roger was always ready to help family, friends, and neighbors with any project they were working on. He was a loving husband, dad and papa.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Tammy Jean; siblings, Viola Pflughoeft, Orman Volkman, Lilla Ford, Hubert Volkman, Jr., Benjamin Volkman, Mildred Palbicki, Harry Volkman, Marvin Volkman, and James Volkman. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Jean; children, Laurie Rasmussen, Steve Volkman, and Christon (Christopher) Best; grandchildren, Ashley and Taylor Rasmussen, Hunter, Summer, and Briar Volkman; brothers, Wilbert (Jean) Volkman, Henry (Ellen) Volkman, and Melvin Volkman; sisters, Elnora Jonsgaard, Etta Meyer and Marcella (Stanley) Marin; sister-in-laws Helen Volkman and Doris Oevering, and many more relatives and friends.

A service to remember Roger will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winona, with Rev. Paul F. Welke officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and then from 10:00 a.m. until time of service Monday at the church. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Hart Township, Minn. Casket Bearers will be Christopher Best, Jerry Burch, Dean Erdmann, Kent Erdmann, Vic Erdmann, Stanley Marin, Richard Merchlewitz, Tom Volkman, and Hunter Volkman. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Ashley Rasmussen, Taylor Rasmussen, Summer Volkman, and Briar Volkman.

Words of sympathy or remembrance may be left at www.fawcett-junkerfuneralhome.com. Services entrusted to Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Winona, Minn. and Fountain, Wis.
