McVey, Deloris E. (04/07/2014)
May 17, 1918 – April 1, 2014

Deloris E. McVey, 95, formerly of Winona, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the Lighthouse at Bethany Riverside in La Crosse.

She was born May 17, 1918, in Zumbro Falls, Minn., to B.R. (Ralph) and Tena A. (Freiheit) Theisen. The local school only went through 10th grade, so Deloris went to Rochester for her junior and senior years, graduating in 1935. She moved to Winona to attend Winona State Teachers’ College, graduating in 1940. While in Winona, she met her future husband, Jerry (McVey’s Ice Cream Shop), and the two of them were wed on December 5, 1942, in Beverly Hills, Calif. While Jerry fought in World War II, Deloris taught school in several communities, including McCook, Neb., and Cannon Falls, Alexandria, Northfield, and Rochester, Minn. When the war ended, Deloris and Jerry moved back to Winona, where they raised a family and where Deloris taught kindergarten in the public schools (primarily Central) until her retirement in 1983.

Deloris was community-minded, volunteering at Watkins Home (1,472¼ hours!) and Community Memorial Hospital. She taught Head Start and was active in Central United Methodist Church. Deloris loved bridge, cookies, the Minnesota Twins (go, Kirby Puckett!) and Vikings, and sitting on the back porch on summer evenings, smoking a cigarette (in her younger years) and reading a good book. She suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for more than 15 years. Through it all, Deloris retained her core personality; she was warm, kind, and carried herself with a quiet dignity. She was a beautiful and loving person.

Deloris is survived by two sons, Dennis (Joan) McVey of Kentfield, Calif., and Douglas McVey (Sharon Sharp) of La Crosse; a granddaughter, Erin; a grandson, Wells Pollock; and a sister, Donna Luke. She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald (2002), and by her parents.

A service of remembrance will be held on Monday, April 7, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, Winona, with Rev. Justin Halbersma presiding. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 6, from 1 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, and on Monday at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or to The Lighthouse at Bethany Riverside, La Crosse.

Words of sympathy or remembrance may be left at www.fawcett-junkerfuneralhome.com. Services entrusted to Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Winona, Minn. and Fountain City, Wis.
