Teresa Katherine Hengel, age 81, passed away in the early morning hours of May 8, 2014, peacefully in her sleep after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
Teresa was born on July 14, 1932, in Winona, Minn., to Peter and Margaret (Drazkowski) Hengel. Teresa grew up in the Winona area. She worked at Boland Manufacturing for 10 years before moving to Minneapolis in 1959 with her lifelong friend Joane Galewski.
Teresa graduated from Cliff’s Beauty School in 1960 and began her career in the beauty industry. Teresa worked as a hair stylist for 35 years. The majority of that time was spent working for the Looking Glass Salon at Dayton’s. In her time as a stylist her clientele included local celebrities and numerous Governors’ wives.
Teresa was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Vikings and Twins. She enjoyed golfing and bowling throughout her life. Teresa retired in 1994 and moved back to Winona where she lived with her sisters, Mary (deceased) and Gerrie. Teresa donated her time in retirement to St. Anne Extended Healthcare.
Teresa was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Peter Jr.; and sisters, Mary Hengel, Jean Marie Hengel, and Joyce (Hengel) Langowski. She is survived by her brother, Eugene (Darlene), Tampa, Fla.; and sister, Gerrie Hengel, Winona; sister-in-law, Mary (Glidden) Hengel; nieces and nephews, Jean (Steve) Hegarty, Blaine, Minn.; James (Pam), Zimmerman, Minn.; Janis (Roger) Anderson, Zimmerman, Minn.; Nancy (Jim) Berg, Lutz, Fla.; Steve (Lynne), Orlando, Fla.; Jeff (Kathy), Tampa, Fla.; Pat (Michelle) Langowski, Winona, Minn.; Paul (Melissa) Langowski, St. Michael, Minn.; Mike (Mandy), Seattle, Wash.; and Chris, Boston, Mass.; and many other beloved family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2014, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The Reverend Glenn Frerichs will officiate.
Teresa will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on Thursday, May 15, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m.
