Nicholas “Nick” Hilton Oswald, 33, of Goodview, died Thursday morning, June 12, at his home in hospice care. Nick was born September 1, 1980, in Janesville, Wis., to Arnie and Jan (Hilton) Oswald.
Nick graduated from Badger High School, Lake Geneva, Wis., in 1999, and had been involved in orchestra, playing the cello and bass, ran for the cross-country team and was part of an improv team performing in London and Scotland. He graduated from Winona State University in 2004, with degrees in communications and business administration. Nick later achieved his master’s degree in criminology. On September 15, 2007, Nick and Angela Tangeman were married at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Anamosa, Iowa. They made their home in Winona. He worked as a corrections officer at Red Wing Correctional Facility, later as a Sentence to Serve crew leader in Shakopee and Carver counties. Currently, Nick was a probation officer for the Department of Corrections, first working with juveniles and more recently, adults in Drug Court.
He was an active member of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka as a lector, usher, and taught religious education. While in college Nick had a part of the “Shakespeare in the Park” production and the Winona Players Improv. He will be long remembered for his sarcastic humor and quick wit.
Survivors include his wife, Angela; twin children, Jonathon and Isabella; his parents, Arnie and Jan Oswald of Lake Geneva, Wis.; maternal grandparents, Corwin and Virginia Hilton; father-in-law, Roy Tangeman, of Anamosa, Iowa; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Michelle Tangeman, in 2011.
A Funeral Mass for Nick will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, at Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka with the Reverend Thomas J. Hargesheimer officiating. Burial of Nick’s cremated body will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hoff Celebration of Life Center in Goodview.
