WOW — Time to dance in the streets! (06/18/2014)
by GRSF’s Lee Gundersheimer

and Doug Scholz-Carlson

Lee: Hey Doug, wasn’t that Steamboat Days fun?

Doug: Yes, quite a spirited week — great music, fun food, classic cars —

Lee: And then there was the Historical Society’s Chocolate, Champagne, and Shakespeare event to support the Winona History Center.

Doug: Very elegant, and very fattening —

Lee: Everyone’s calendars are filling up and the summer is just beginning —

Doug: But next weekend, June 25 to June 27, is time for a little WOW — Will’s Opening Weekend — the start of the Great River Shakespeare’s 11th season.

Lee: And with a $10 WOW button you get admission to three fantastic exclusive parties and three days over two weekends of special events.

Doug: Details are at grsf.org/wow, but there are two events we want to highlight — first, on opening night —

Lee: We are going to bring New Orleans up the Mississippi River to Winona.

Doug: After a free special Levee Park concert from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. — featuring Annie Mack Band, a fabulous soul band from Rochester — we are inviting all of Winona and the region to take part in the GRSF New Orleans’ style procession down Johnson Street.

Lee: The street procession will include a jazz band, 30 costumed marching kids, the Trester Trolley, the Wesley Methodist Choir, and all of you, anyone who wants to join in the fun.

Doug: The Steamboat Days parade had many people watching —

Lee: It’s our goal to have many people marching.

Doug: Families, friends, whoever wishes to show up —

Lee: The Angora Girls are bringing their alpacas!

Doug: At 6:15 at the outside of the water treatment building on Johnson Street we will line up and begin to walk with a police escort and music and gleeful celebration at 6:30 p.m. all the way to WSU a few blocks away. No WOW button needed. Just a desire to have fun and celebrate summer in Winona and the GRSF season.

Lee: Take an hour and make a memory for your whole family.

Doug: And then after the opening night performance of “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” the city is helping us throw an after party at the Winona Public Library with great food, a cash bar, and the Annie Mack Band providing music for a street dance party from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Lee: Purchase a WOW button for the first of three unforgettable events.

Doug: Join the party by walking down Johnson street and then cap off the night by boogieing down at the coolest library around!

Lee: It’s WOW time. See the plays, enjoy the parties!

Doug: Only in Winona, and only at GRSF.
