Teens flee police at drinking party (06/30/2014)
By Amelia Wedemeyer
On Friday, June 20, at 10:10 p.m., Winona County Sheriff’s Department received a call regarding excess traffic near a dead end road that leads to property owned by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources near Elba. Another caller also reported seeing nine cars with younger people drive past the same location near Elba. Deputies, along with a Minnesota state trooper and St. Charles Police officers, responded to the location and found a large group of young people near a bonfire in a clearing. Deputies reported seeing open and unopened beer cans and bottles everywhere, and detected a “strong odor of alcoholic beverages in the air.” Deputies started administering preliminary breath tests and began notifying parents. Fifteen minors were cited with consumption of alcohol: a 17-year-old female from Altura; a 17-year-old male from Dover; one 16-year-old male and one 17-year-old male from Eyota; one 15-year-old female, three 16-year-old females, and one 16-year-old male from Chatfield; two 17 year-old females from Rochester; one 16-year-old male and three 17-year-old males from St. Charles.

Deputy Sheriff Ron Ganrude reported that St. Charles Police may have executed some additional minor consumption citations.
