WAPS hires new WSHS principal, activities director (07/21/2014)
By Amelia Wedemeyer
Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) will welcome both a new Winona Senior High School (WSHS) principal and a new activities director to the district on Monday. The WAPS Board approved the recommendations of Ryan Jensen as WSHS principal and Casey Indra as WAPS activities director at the board meeting on Thursday night.

Jensen replaces Kelly Halvorsen, who resigned in May to become the WAPS director of learning and teaching. Jensen most recently served as principal of Rockford High School in Rockford, Minn., a position he has held since 2007. Prior to that he was an assistant principal and the dean of students at Princeton Public Schools in Princeton, Minn., which is the same district in which he began his career in education as a social studies teacher in 1990. “I’d like to say that it is an honor to have been selected and I am excited to begin,” Jensen said in a statement. “I look forward to building relationships with students, staff, parents and community members.”

Jensen, who was nominated for the 2006 Minnesota Assistant Principal of the Year, currently serves as president of the Central Minnesota Association of Secondary Schools Principals Executive Board. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Concordia College in Moorhead, a master of arts in curriculum and instruction from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul and an educational administration license from St. Cloud State University. “I think we’re very fortunate to have someone coming [in as principal] who has had years of experience,” said Pat Blaisdell, WAPS director of human resources.

Indra replaces Brad Berzinski, who resigned in June to become the principal of Washington-Kosciusko Elementary School. Indra recently served as activities director as well as an English teacher for Houston Public Schools (HPS), a position he has held since 2008. “I am honored and excited to be a part of [WAPS],” Indra said in a statement. “I look forward to working with the staff, students and community to continue to foster strong activity and athletic programs.”

Indra earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Winona State University (WSU) and earned his certification in athletic administration from the National Interscholastic Athletic Association while working at HPS, and is currently completing his master's degree in athletic management at WSU.

“We are happy to welcome him as the new activities director,” Blaisdell said.

The board unanimously approved the appointment of both Jensen and Indra to these positions.
