A Winona woman who fell from the interstate bridge early Friday morning was pronounced dead at the scene. At 7:56 a.m. on Friday, July 25, Winona Police received a call from someone who reported seeing a female “on the opposite side of the [protective] fence.”
According to Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand, the caller said that a young woman was standing at the edge of the bridge looking down at the water. Winona Police arrived at the scene but were unable to locate the woman. The Winona Fire Department later recovered the woman’s body from the river. Brand said that the incident appears to have been a suicide.
According to Winona Deputy Police Chief Tom Williams, the woman had no identification, no vehicle near the scene and no personal property on the bridge. An autopsy is currently being performed in Rochester.
The Winona Police Department, Winona Fire Department, Winona County Sheriff’s Department and Winona County Dive/Rescue Team all responded to the incident.
