Some eight years ago Pope Benedict got himself into a real pickle by quoting a Byzantine Emperor to the effect that the Muslims were all about the sword, mayhem, and murder. The whole Muslim world was offended and let him know in no uncertain terms. But he was just quoting this emperor, who had direct experience. The Sunni branch of Islam had spread across the totality of North Africa and parts of Catholic Spain. Does anyone think they did this by passing out boxes of figs? ISIS gives us clear evidence of how this was accomplished. I wish their brutal tactics could be imprinted on everyone’s memory, not to be forgotten. I have not heard one single peep out of any Sunni officials condemning ISIS.
Pope Benedict deserves an apology, but there is no government official anywhere demanding this.
In all fairness, though, it must be stated that the Catholic Church does not have clean hands in this type of “conversion” before the Middle Ages.
