The wages of sin is hell? (09/15/2004)
From: Keith Lockwood

The wages of sin is hell. Many churches teach this simple and plain statement, but you will never find it in the Bible. Instead, the Bible tells us that "the wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6:23), the end of sin is death (Rom. 6:21), "Sin reigned in death" (Rom. 5:21), sin bears fruit for death (Rom. 7:5), when sin is full-grown it gives birth to death (James 1:15), "whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death" (James 5:20). God told Adam in Genesis 2:17, "you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." Finally, the Bible tells us that those who stand before the white throne will be judged according to their acts and they will be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, which is the second death (Rev. 20:14). The Bible DOES NOT describe the lake of fire and brimstone, for humans, as an eternity of life in torment. The Bible DOES NOT describe the lake of fire and brimstone as a "spiritual death". The Bible makes it plain and simple, THE SECOND DEATH. We have no cause to think that this death is different than the first death; a state of unconsciousness (see Eccl. 9:5, 10).

Thank God that this will not be their eternal destiny! We are told that at the end of the eons the final enemy will be destroyed: death (1 Cor. 15:26). Those who will be in the lake of fire and brimstone, will be raised from their unconscious state of death and will be made alive in Christ (1 Cor. 15:22-24). At that time God will complete His divine plan of reconciling all things in heaven and on earth to Himself through Jesus Christ (Col. 1:20), and at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Christ Jesus is Lord, to the glory of the Father (Phil. 2:10-11). Declaring this makes me want to say along with Paul, "Oh, the depths of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and His paths beyond tracing out! Seeing that out of Him and through Him and for Him is ALL: to Him be the glory for the eons, Amen!" (Rom. 11: 33, 36).
