Hides for Habitat etiquette (10/19/2003)
Hides for Habitat is a recycling program designed and conducted by Minnesota Deer Hunters Association and its chapters to generate habitat funding from deer hides. Proceeds from your donated hides are returned to participating MDHA chapters for local habitat projects and to the MDHA state habitat account which funds habitat projects throughout the state. In 2002, MDHA collected over 52,000 hides at an average value of $4.50 per hide.

To make the most of this donation opportunity, some simple guidelines will ensure the highest quality rating of your donated hides.

-Pull hides; do not cut: "Pulled" hides provide higher returns than "cut" hides. "Pulled" hides are removed from the deer with minimal knife use and simply pulled off the carcass. "Cut" hides most often have cut marks and holes in them.

-Remove the hide quickly: Hides are most easily removed when the carcass is fresh and preferably warm. This minimizes the amount of cutting required. Gauze game bags are available from most local sporting goods stores and should be placed over the meat to protect it from dirt and insects during travel.

-Hides only: Hides need not be fleshed or scraped. Do not include any heads, feet, or lower legs with your hide donation. The hide is the only portion of the animal desired. MDHA must pay disposal fees associated with extra refuse.

-Where to donate: 45 of MDHA's 61 chapters participate in the Hides for Habitat. For the drop box location nearest to you, visit MDHA's website at www.mndeerhunters.com or call 800-450-3337, ext 12.

Established in 1980, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association is a non-profit, non-partisan organization composed of approximately 20,000 members and 61 chapters throughout Minnesota. "MDHA is dedicated to the conservation and betterment of deer and deer hunting in Minnesota."
