Goodview Elementary raises $1,000 for tsunami victims (01/30/2005)
The fourth grade students at Goodview Elementary School studied about the tsunami and the resulting devastation that it caused in Southeast Asia. Students became very involved in learning about this current event and decided that they wanted to do something to help. Students did research into various relief organizations and then voted as to which project would receive the funds that they raised. They made posters and put them around the school, went and talked to all of the other classes in the school to tell them about the tsunami project, and sent a letter home to parents to ask for their help (or chores that they could do to earn money to contribute to the tsunami fund).
Money was raised and a check for a little over $1,000 was presented by the fourth grade teachers, Mrs. Downie and Mrs. Yahnke to Ms. Sue Hutson, Emergency Services Director, from the Winona County Red Cross. Ms. Hutson gave a very informative all-school program explaining how the Red Cross worked throughout the world, showed before/after photos of the tsunami's devastation, and explained how their donation would help the people.
