Winfins swim team going to state (02/20/2005)
By Andrea Northam
On Sunday, February 20, the Winona YMCA Winfins swim team will be going to the state swim meet held at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, campus.

The team is sending forty-nine members to compete at the state level. "Every year we send kids to the state meet, but this is really one of the best teams we've had," said YMCA Aquatics Director and Winfins coach, Jim Pingry. "It's been a really fun year."

The ease with which the season has passed and the success that the team has encountered can be attributed in part to some older members from the WSHS girls swim team. According to Pingry, "They've really served as an example for the younger girls."

Pingry also directed praise toward his assistant coaches, Amy Johnson and Kurt Rannenberg, who worked hard to make the experience enjoyable and the team a success.

Team members are carpooling to the Twin Cities and many will be staying at the Radisson Hotel adjacent to the campus. The meet starts at 8:30 a.m. and will last until approximately 6:00 p.m.

Membership on the Winfins swim team is open to both boys and girls, ages six to eighteen. Funding for the program comes from both local fund-raisers and team fees. Parent involvement is also important, with about forty parents currently contributing their support to the program.

The Winfins swim program works cooperatively with the Winona Senior High School. Local Winfins swim meets are held at WSHS, and gyms at the YMCA are used to host various WSHS sporting events.

Pingry expects the team to do very well at the state meet on Sunday. "We will definitely come back with some state champions," he said.

Individuals qualifying for the state meet include: Louise Bagshaw, Matt Bagshaw, Sarah Bagshaw, Mary Bastian, Bridget Bawek, Haley Bawek, Anna Becker, Marni Benson, Amanda Blue, Mackenzie Brosnahan, Roger Brosnahan, Justin Bublitz, Casey Burke, Calvin Dretske, Emily Ekern, Alex Gengreau, Zach Gengreau, Lindsay George, Alyssa Goodew, Hodd Gorman, Nathan Graetz, Erin Keane, McKenna Marg, Cassie McKinley, Melinda Mergendahl, Tessa Morgan, Katie Nachtigal, Aimee Peterson, Sam Peterson, Angel Pingry, Maddie Pingry, Roxie Pingry, Bradley Piper, McKenzie Porter, Joshua Pratt, Abbey Quandahl, Samantha Quandahl, Gideon Repinski, Aeriel Sacia, Abby Staats, Olivia Staats, Alyssa Trainor, Lance Urbick, Aaron Whyte, Amber Wilson, Cherisse Wolvington, Haylei Wood, Katie Young and Alexandra Zuelke.
