Healthy Kids Club kick-off is January 10

Winona Health and area partners invite all 6 to 11 year olds and their parents/guardians to attend ‘Healthy U!” on Saturday, January 10, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Winona Middle School, 1570 Homer Road, in Winona. This fun event is free, but children must be registered for the event by January 8, and all children must be accompanied by an adult to attend.

Children will register for two of the following mini workshops:

Football Skills and Drills – Learn skills and drills from Winona State football players. Wear your tennis shoes because you’ll be getting a fun workout as you learn.

Yoga – Yoga helps you become more aware of your body’s posture, alignment and patterns of movement. Yoga helps make the body more flexible while also helping you relax. Join staff from the YMCA to learn and experience the benefits of yoga.

Dance, dance, dance! Learn dance moves and get exercise at the same time. Winona State University dance team will show you fun steps to get you movin!

Fun and Fruity – Join Winona Health dietitians as they show you how to make a healthy fruit snack. Not only will you get to make your own snack, you’ll get to eat it too!

Fish Printing – Join Ranger Ed from Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge to learn about the history of fish printing. During this workshop you will design a bandana to take home – you’ll create a unique piece of art all while learning about fish!

Pizza Extraordinaire - Yes, pizza is healthy when you make it with healthy ingredients like whole wheat tortillas and veggies! Test your skills with Winona County 4H staff and see what kind of personal pizza maker extraordinaire you are!

While children participate in their choice of activities, adults will attend two presentations.

The Power of Positive Parenting by Luke and Brenda Merchlewitz

This session will include a variety of topics related to children’s development including raising confident kids and tips for managing challenging behaviors. The Merchlewitzs are parents and Winona Area Public School employees. Luke is a teacher at Washington-Kosciusko and is Winona’s Teacher of the Year. Brenda teaches music at Jefferson and Rollingstone schools. In addition, they have been teaching together at Winona State University for the past six years.

Healthy and Budget Friendly Meals by Jennifer Wood, Hy-Vee Dietitian, and Sue Haug, Winona Health Dietitian

When you think of making your family a meal, do you often think of Hamburger Helper or a drive thru? Jennifer and Sue will share some menu ideas that are inexpensive, healthy and quick for families on the go. You will learn some simple tricks that will help you stick to your grocery budget while feeding your family a nutritious meal you feel good about serving.

After the programs, the gym will be open from noon to 1 p.m. so families have the option of staying and playing. This is a great opportunity for children and adults to get some exercise on a winter day. Both large and small gyms will be open.

There is no charge for the event but advanced registration is required. Register online at or call 507.457.4161.

Thanks to funding provided by the Winona Health Foundation, Healthy Kids Club Wellness Journals will be available for children, ages 6 to 11, who have not already received one.
