Renowned African musical artist to perform with Mike Munson

Siama Matuzungidi will perform with Mike Munson on Saturday, October 12, at 8 p.m., at Ed’s [No Name] Bar, 252 East Third Street, Winona.

SIAMA’S AFROBILLY: Feel-good sounds from the Heart of Africa

Back in Africa, Siama (see-AH-maw) Matuzungidi earned the moniker, “Soukous Legend” by recording hundreds of songs and touring the world with popular artists. (Soukous is a popular genre of upbeat Congolese dance music.) Now based in Minneapolis, Matuzungidi’s original songs are inspired by traditional Congolese music, Congolese rumba music and Soukous. He’s known for his intricate acoustic guitar, spirited singing, catchy songs and traditional African instruments like mbira (thumb piano) and balafon (marimba). For this very special concert, Matuzungidi will be joined by Winona’s own Mike Munson, vocalist Dallas Johnson and American traditional percussionist Mikkel Beckmen. Together they’ll invite the audience to experience the joyous music and culture of Matuzungidi’s rural Bas Congo homeland and their acoustic take of back-in-the-day African dance floors.

In addition to concerts, Matuzungidi and his wife Dallas perform for young children at libraries and events, they teach in schools for Classical MPR’s “Class Notes” program and COMPAS and they’ve earned world music pedagogy certificates from Smithsonian Folkways. Matuzungidi is a McKnight Fellow and he’s received Minnesota State Arts Board grants (artist initiative, community partnership and arts tour) and an MRAC Next Steps grant.

Matuzungidi’s 2016 release, “Rivers – from the Congo to the Mississippi” was featured in Songlines Magazine and by BBC News. His 2018 kids’ album, The Land of Yangalele,” received a Parents’ Choice Parent Approved award and has earned accolades from Grammy-award winning artists The Okee Dokee Brothers (“We dig it! A great addition to the family music mosaic! Outstanding rhythms and performances.” and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, “When we listen to “The Land of Yangalele” we hear home, Mama Africa. This is very beautiful music that everyone can enjoy.”) Learn more on
