The Cotter girls cross country team was invited to a state meet alternative due to their Section 1A victory on October 16. Due to MSHSL rules, the team could not wear official team uniforms and their coach could not “coach” them since it is officially the offseason.
The girls had a great day and finished number two at the state meet alternative. Luverne won with 44 points, Cotter took second at 99, and Glencoe-Silver Lake came in third at 129. Ten teams competed including half of the top 10 teams in the state (based on the final coaches’ poll after the section meet), including #2 Luverne, #5 Hawley, #6 Cotter, #9 Pequot Lakes, and #10 Belle Plaine. As the Cotter girls handily defeated the Hawley girls, they moved into the top five teams in the state. Since #1 ranked Staples-Motley, #3 ranked Murray County Central, and #4 Perham didn’t show up, the girls will never know whether they could have climbed further up within the top five this year.
