The former Winona Shopko was just sold for $2.25 million and is slated to become a U-Haul rental and self-storage facility, U-Haul officials announced. A temporary showroom offering rentals will open on Monday, March 8, while the company aims to finish a bigger remodel by this summer.

U-Haul’s parent company, AMERCO Real Estate, bought the nearly 85,000-square-foot former Shopko store for $2.25 million, according to state real estate transaction records. Winona County Recorder Bob Bambenek said the sale followed an online auction. The property was previously owned by a Michigan-based holding company.

“Our plan is to create a full-service U-Haul retail and self-storage facility at 405 Cottonwood Drive,” U-Haul Company of Southern Minnesota President Chris Bohlman wrote in an email. “Our full-service stores often include an expansive, remodeled retail showroom; indoor climate-controlled self-storage units with high-tech security features; towing accessories and professional hitch installation; propane; U-Box portable storage containers; the eco-friendly Take A Box, Leave A Box program; a U-Haul Re-Use Center where the community can share gently used household furnishings; and much more.”

Bohlman added, “Our plans and timelines are subject to city approvals and other variables; however, we aim to have a modern U-Haul moving and self-storage center completed this summer.”

At a smaller property just across Highway 14, Winona Leasing & Sales currently offers U-Haul rentals among other services.

The former Shopko store closed in 2019 — one of numerous Shopko locations to shut down following the company’s bankruptcy. It joined K-Mart and J.C. Penney’s among the large retail stores in Winona that have closed and been repurposed in recent years.

“U-Haul is excited to be a key part of the Winona community for years to come,” Bohlman wrote.
