Cotter Band students selected to WSU Honor Band & Jazz Band Festival
The Winona State University Department of Music hosted the 37th annual High School Honor Band Festival on November 1-2 in the Performing Arts Center. This annual event brought together approximately 100 high school band musicians who represent 24 high schools throughout the region.
The festival concluded with a Grande Finale Concert presented by the honor band and the WSU Symphonic Wind ensemble .
The talented musicians representing Cotter High School were Matt Besek, Aidan Carlson, Olivia Carrillo, Ceili Demarias, Viva Graff, Gabe Welch, Megan Zenke, and Hannah Graff
The Winona State University Department of Music hosted the 15th annual High School Honor Jazz Band Festival on November 8-9 in the Performing Arts Center. This festival created two jazz big bands out of students from across the state, and placed them in bands based off auditions. The festival concluded with a finale concert.
The guest artist was the Optimism Jazz Sextet, a local jazz group from the Winona area. The directors for the two honor ensembles were local saxophonist Ray Dretske, and former Cotter High School band director Dave Gudmastad.

Cotter Choir students participated in 2019 University Of Wisconsin - Eau Claire Clearwater Honors Choir Festival
Congratulations to Cotter Choir students Luke Broghammer, Colin Cada, Anne Galke, Hunter Ramsden, and Hannah Scholl for being selected to participate in this year’s Clearwater Honor Choir Festival at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. The Cotter Choir members combined with other selected students from area high schools for a one-day choral festival on Saturday, October 19, at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire campus. The UW-Eau Claire Men’s Choir, “The Singing Statesmen,” and the UW-EC Women’s Concert Chorale presented a mini-concert to the Clearwater Festival High School Choir students on Saturday afternoon in the Gantner Concert Hall in the Haas Fine Arts Center.
The high school students in the Clearwater Honors Festival Choir rehearsed throughout the day and concluded with a finale concert in the Pablo Center at the Confluence Arts Facility on Saturday, October 19, 2019. Also featured in the evening concert was the UW-Eau Claire Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Franklin Watkins. Cotter alumnus, Benny Fung, class of 2019, is singing in the UW-Eau Claire Choir. He is majoring in music composition.

Congratulations to Cotter High School music students selected to participate in this year’s Three Rivers All-Conference Honors Band and Choir.
Cotter Choir students who represented Cotter for the Three Rivers All-Conference Honor Choir were Faye Li, Anne Galke, Fiona Flanagan, Grace Miller, Jordan Rubie, Colin Cada, Bowen Tian, Tony Wan, Luke Broghammer, and Adam Li.
Three Rivers All-Conference Honor Band members from Cotter were Megan Zenke (trombone), Matt Besek (trumpet), Gabe Welch (tuba), Olivia Carrillo (piccolo), Ceili Demarais (alto saxophone), Aidan Carlson (bass clarinet), Nick Walechka (trumpet), and Hunter Ramsden (trombone).
The selected Three Rivers High School All-Conference Honor Band and All-Conference Honor Choir presented a concert on Monday, November 4, 2019, at host school Rushford-Peterson High School in Rushford.
The Three Rivers All-Conference Honor Choir was under the guest direction of Dr. Aaron Humble, choral director at the University of Minnesota – Mankato, Minn. The Three Rivers All-Conference Honor Band guest conductor was Dr. Timothy Mahr, band director from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
The Three Rivers All-Conference Honors Band premiered a commissioned instrumental piece this year entitled “Old Man Run.” This year’s commissioned piece was specifically written for the Three Rivers All-Conference Honor Band and composed by Dr. Timothy Mahr. Dr. Mahr also served as this year’s Three Rivers All-Conference Band guest conductor.
