Local fire departments are participating in the statewide homemade mask drive and collection on Saturday, April 25.
Stations will be accepting donations of homemade masks made to CDC or similar guidelines. Masks may be dropped off between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. local stations (see below).
Donation bins will be located outside each station and clearly marked. If multiple donors arrive at the same time, please take turns and practice physical distancing of at least six feet. Firefighters will not be physically present outside the stations in order to protect their safety. Masks will be appropriately disinfected and cleaned before they're distributed.
For information and instructions on making masks with or without sewing, visit cdc.gov/coronavirus or the state of Minnesota's resource page at mn.gov/covid19/for-minnesotans/volunteer/masks.jsp.
The Winona Fire Department has been working proactively for weeks with group housing across the city, from care facilities to apartment complexes, training building managers, care staff and residents in safe practices, and providing several hundred homemade masks made by community volunteers, coordinated by the Winona Neighbors Helping Neighbors group.
The Winona Neighbors group has so far coordinated the making and distribution of thousands of masks to individuals and organizations, led by Winona Friendship Center director Malia Fox, who has connected more than 100 volunteer sewers across Winona.
"They're finding purpose and community by making masks," she said.
Folks interested in making masks on an ongoing basis, or individuals in need of masks, are invited to visit the Winona Neighbors Facebook group at facebook.com/groups/WinonaNeighbors.
